Cascades |

The great length and strong north-south linearity
of the Cascade Range, a narrow, inland, yellow band extending from
southern Washington to northern California, contrasts sharply with
the varied directional trends of other mountain groups to the east
and northeast. The Cascades arose through the plate collisions that
have enlarged the western continent over the course of the Cenozoic
era. This mountain range contains such large and recently active
volcanoes as Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, and Mount Shasta as well
as Crater Lake.
